I bought these for a 12 year old boy who is Dyslexic. He had been in Special ED at school for 5 years but he continued to have trouble reading so he did not enjoy reading. Once I started buying the Pokemon books he started reading more. These are simple to read and easy for him to read. After he reads a book I have him write a 2 or 3 sentence book report for each book. He must complete the book reports for every book in the collection before I order him the next collection. It took him a couple of months to complete the reading and book reports for the first 2 collections I bought. Now he has the books read and the book reports written within a couple of week. He told me the other day he is enjoying reading. Thank you Hidenori Kusaka for writing these books.
This is a pokemon manga set that any true pokemon fan must own. It not only gives you a full set for less than list price, but it gives you a complex story that is much better than the anime series. The story is much darker and is a great read for anyone of any age group that is a fan of pokemon.
First of all let me say that I love this manga. It's a great choice for anyone who is either looking for a children's series for their kid, or is a Pokemon fan wanting to experience a world that feels much more dramatic than the anime.I have to say, however, that I have some issues with Viz Media's release. One complaint is that it's annoying how two characters' names are switched. For anyone who doesn't know, in the Japanese version the male rival of Red is named Green and the girl who owns a Squirtle is named Blue. In the English version their names are switched so Green is the girl and Blue is the boy. I know that this was done originally to "match" the games (where the original versions released in the US were Red and Blue) but now that it's been over a decade since the games first came out, I think it'd be better to leave them as they are.I also don't like how Viz Media's translation includes censorship. There is a scene in one of the later volumes of this box set where Crystal's mother is introduced and she slaps her daughter. In the English version this is (badly) painted over and edited into her simply looking angry at her daughter. I understand that they want to make it more "child appropriate" and not show an abusive mother in a children's series but I disagree with it. The edited version looks bad and doesn't make any sense, not only that, it removes an important aspect of Crystal's character. This isn't the only scene that is censored in this translation of the manga. There are others in the Ruby and Sapphire arc regarding the same issue, where Ruby is physically mistreated by his father Norman, changed into "an accident". I know that it is a difficult issue to present an abusive parent in a series aimed at a young audience, but I think it would be better and more respectful to the artists' intentions to leave the original story intact, rather than censor it.However, in the grand scheme of things those are fairly minor complaints, and I would still highly recommend this series. I'd go so far as to say it is a MUST READ for all Pokemon fans. I absolutely love the characters and this storyline is probably my favorite "version" of Pokemon and the one that rings the most true to me, above the games and the anime.
Huge hit in my household. Every time my son goes to the library, he searches for Pokémon books..and rarely finds any worth borrowing. He was so happy to see this box set & has already gone through it once. Great purchase.
Gen II was my favorite in the Pokemon series, and seeing it come to life on the pages of this manga is just magical. I'd really love to see the Pokemon Adventures series adapted into an anime one day. That would be a dream come true!
I really enjoy these books, the tv series in comparison sucks entirely. I can't wait for the next set to come out.
This selection will keep your kids entertained and quietly reading for hours. The only thing to keep in mind is that it uses the Japanese direction of printing so they read it from "front" to "back".
Loved the books. And love the story going on. I like how it tells us the readers why this stranger who in the game was outside the professors lab and tells us why he stole that pokemon and its great to see and find out why the team rocket was making a comeback. And it talks a little about the GS Ball. So, I really recommend people try out this box set.
