As an elementary music teacher, I have found that Too Much Noise is an excellent story to read in music class when discussing dynamics (louds and softs) to first graders. After learning sound effects, i.e. "creaking","squeaking", "swish", "hiss" and animal noises, my students get swept up in the gradual crescendo of the story. The sudden quiet effect that occurs in the room when all the animals leave the old man's house is breath-taking and mesmerizing to the children. One can literally hear a pin drop. Such is the power of great story-telling!
This is one of my favorite children's books. It is a lot of fun to read and has repetative sounds that children love to hear. The audience of children can begin to anticipate what you are going to read and therefore participate in the reading of the book. It is also a classic tale as it reminds the reader and audience of how one needs to appreciate what one has, because it could be worse. A farmer complains to a judge that his house is too noisy. The judge instructs the farmer to obtain different animals one at a time until the poor farmer has a house full of a variety of animals. The judge then has some further instructions that in the end the farmer is very happy and content with how his home was in the beginning, and his home does not seem so noisy anymore. I would highly recommend this book for parents and teachers to read to children between the ages of 3-7yrs.
This was one of my favorite stories as a kid, and still is as an adult. The text is easy to read with good repetition, without being dull. My daughter loves it as much as I do. As an amature storyteller, I can say this story is always a hit.
This was my favorite book when I was little. I made my mother read it to me at least one hundred times a day. Now that I have children of my own, I want to share it with them. My 3 year old son knows most of the book by heart now. I look forward to cuddling up with my children every night before bed to read this story together.
I was a substitute librarian, and was thrust into a storytime. The librarian handed me this boook and said it was a great ice breaker. I read it to the class, and it's true! This book practically tells itself - and the kids loved making the animals sounds with me. Well, I decided I was having so much fun, I shifted gears and became a children's librarian, and used this book a LOT! Not only fun with the various animals, but good vocabulary (hissed, swished, etc.) and the children really do get to know new words and also know instinctively what they mean. I cannot praise it highly enough - bought it for both my nephews!
What a funny, silly picture book! I've read this to K-2 classes and they get the point: We complain until we see life could be worse. And that is the lesson the "wise man" of the village teaches "old man" Peter. But HOW he "trickily" teaches this is the fun of the story.I am amazed at the cummulative memory the youngest have in accompanying me in the repetitious words and sounds. They have fun. What a way to build a vocabulary! And the illustrations are super! The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)
I got this book as part of a fairy tale unit, (Evan Moor Pockets), and it was the best lesson in there. It is the story of a man who is annoyed by small noises in his house until a wise old man makes his house even noisier and he gets some perspective. In the end, his house returns to normal and he no longer complains about the same old noises. It really made my kids think. It's about relative levels of noise, which took quite awhile for my kindergartner and first grader to understand... which was the whole point! The book was a fabulous start for this lesson, and lent itself to many experiments around the house as I tried to help my kids understand why the same noise sounds louder in different circumstances. I think most moms wish their kids understood this better (i.e. Why is being noisy in the library SO noisy?).The story is simple, well-told, and has no spoilers in it (no inappropriate language or stupid editorials). I am aware that there is a more modern version of this story out there, but the old version here is the best.
Get your 'reading aloud' skills honed up for the sound effects and prepare for multi-generational amusemen. We had this book in soft cover when our four children were little but finding it again, I can say for certain that the most fun you've ever had is easily found when reading this to grandchildren."swooosh!"Buy it in the hardback and save for the future to keep the giggles coming from little people for many years. But shhhhush! For Peter still thinks there's Too Much Noise.
