I was so excited to get this because my daughter LOVES her Pout Pout Fish board book, but it's like a dumbed down version of the original. There is very little text and the story doesn't have the smoochy ending. It's a nice book for a very young toddler who is not ready for the whole Pout Pout Fish book, but if choosing between the two I'd go for the original, and if you have the original, I wouldn't buy this one.
I love Pout-Pout Fish! I'm a big fan, and I love to use the original Pout Pout Fish and Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark in my preschool story times. They are always big hits. Smile is a very short intro to this charming character that is tailor made for the tiniest of story listeners. I am very excited to use this with my baby story time group, even though the size is a little small for group sharing. At only 12 pages, it's a short little story that gives baby a great first glimpse at emotions. Mr. Fish is as expressive as ever, and does a great job of showing the reader his worried, sad, sad, scared and mad faces. Of course we also get to see that famous pout, and all ends well when he gets cheered up at the end and delivers an exuberant smile. What cheers him up? You know it had to be a smooch.This is a sturdy board book, so it will of course be able to withstand lots of love and repeat readings. The blue ocean color palette is as appealing as ever, and Mr. Fish's big expressive face perfectly complements a text that exhibits a wonderfully smooth read aloud flow. This little intro is heavy on charm and is a big recommend for infants and toddlers.
My son just loves Pout Pout Fish and Pout Pout Fish in the big big dark so I bought this one to go with his collection. Yes this book is just a short 12 pages compared to 30 in the original book but when you have a super sleepy toddler or a young one who can't sit still this book is perfect. It is a great intro to the world of PPF and once you've read this one you will be ready for more! These books are so very expressive so it's a great way to really get into the story with your little. My son just loves all the faces. I do love the original better book better.
I was so excited to find out that a board book was being made available as my 2 year old destroyed the original Pout Pout Fish book. I didn't want to spend another $16 for him to ruin another book.This board book was a great compromise as my son loves to kiss a happy pout pout fish at the end of the story. This book is beautifully illustrated and a quick read. Enjoy!
We are Pout-Pout fans and the youngest member of the fan club (1 1/2) loves the pictures and page turning. He now has his own book as we go over the longer version and he can turn pages back and forth. Everyone enjoys. Thanks for coming up with a simplified version for littler folks.
I absolutely love Deborah's first book, "The Pout Pout Fish" and my son and I read it together all the time. I was excited to expand our collection with another book but was disappointed in this one. The original book is so creative with it's rhyming but this one is short and very matter-of-fact. I don't think I would have purchased it if I had seen it in a bookstore. He does love fish so he will look at it occasionally.
Cute little board book, but the limited room for text, makes for a boring book. If you love the original Pout-Pout fish books, they are cute, but they don't rhyme like the original, which takes most of the fun out of reading it. Good for very little ones though, not much text at all.
I bought this book for my 2 year old who absolutely adores the original Pout Pout fish book. She still likes this one but not nearly as much. It is much simpler than I expected with only one very short sentence per page compared to the paragraph a page in the original book. Definitely take a look at the editorial review section on for a better idea of what the pages look like (this wasn't available when I purchased mine)
