I Yam A Donkey!

Even frustrated grammarians will giggle at the who’s-on-first routine that begins with a donkey’s excited announcement, “I yam a donkey!” Unfortunately the donkey’s audience happens to be a yam, and one who is particular about sloppy pronunciation and poor grammar. An escalating series of misunderstandings leaves the yam furious and the clueless donkey bewildered by the yam’s growing (and amusing) frustration. The yam finally gets his point across, but regrettably, he’s made the situation a little bit too clear . . . and the story ends with a dark and outrageously funny twist.

This is one of my all-time favorite new children's books. I am absolutely in love with it. The first time I read through it, I was standing in my office alone, doing voices for Donkey and Yam, and I cracked myself up. My four year old daughter loves it, too! Hysterically funny, it's a must for any member of the Grammar Police. English majors unite!

My 7-year-old LOVES this book - we've read it countless times and it always gets lots of laughs. Cute pictures and easy for children to follow - a nice, simple early grammar lesson. I was a little worried that my son would be upset when the yam gets eaten, but he thought it was hilarious.

Summary: A donkey declares, “I yam a donkey!” and a yam tries to correct his grammar. “I am a donkey.” “You is a donkey?” asks the donkey, and the rest of the book is an unsuccessful attempt to get things straight. The argument eventually attracts the attention of a carrot, turnip, and a bunch of green beans, who are used as examples in the yam’s unsuccessful grammar lessons. Grades K-3.Pros: This book is funny. Period. It’s not a real grammar lesson, so don’t take it seriously. The bright cartoon illustrations and comic bubble dialog will appeal to kids and the ridiculous arguments will have them rolling with laughter.Cons: The vegetables get eaten. Sorry.

My kids (two girls ages 4 and 6) and I all love this book! The illustrations are funny, the exchange between the two characters was entertaining, and my 6 year old was able to read most of it herself. They have begged me to read it again every night since we got it.

We borrowed this book from the library & had to renew it several times. My 5 yr old got a kick out of this book, especially since I did different voices for the different characters. Parents were invited to come in and read to their student's class, and this is one of the books I chose to read to the Kindergarten class...they got a big laugh out of it.

What a lovely store about funny grammar mistakes. Full of wisdom and humor that kids all get the story and learned how to use it right. We even role played afterward and kids all love it.

This book is great! It's funny yet teaches the concept of simple appropriate grammar. 5 year old son loved it and husband laughed out loud. One for the whole family to enjoy.

My five year old absolutely adores this book. We laughed just as much as our child. Highly recommended.
