Emily Gravett, Orange Pear Apple Bear (Simon and Schuster, 2005)I love Emily Gravett. Wolves is one of the best children's books I've ever come across, and so when I found out Orange Pear Apple Bear was getting an American release, I immediately signed on. This one's almost as fun, though not nearly as dark; not surprisingly, it's all about an orange, a pear, an apple, and a bear. The drawings are brash and fun, and the preschool set should love them. Adults probably won't be as amused by it as by Wolves, but get used to it, 'cause your three-year-old will get a real kick out of it. And deservedly so, 'cause it's a lot of fun. ****
This is a must have for every library. Beautiful watercolor illustrations, fun story, simple patterns. Adored by my 10 month old and her 5 yr old sis.
While browsing B&N I came across this book and was instantly smitten by the adorable quizzical look on the bear's face on the cover. With only five simple words this book is surprisingly engaging, endearing, and humorous. This book is an excellent reminder of the pure innocence and preciousness of childhood and the opportunity afforded by motherhood to see that which passes by the window of time and is forgotten all too quickly.
I am an children's book author/illustrator and have looked at many picture books on my own and with my son. This is one of the few that stands out. Though exceedingly simple, this book is very rich. It is a primer on shape, color, language, and perhaps, mostly, on imagination. There is a lot to engage and to tickle young children. I wish I had done it.
I bought this book for my son last Easter, the pages are thick and the story is just adorable. The only bad thing was it arrived in horrible condition, beat up ends and one of the pages were ripped. When I called they wanted me to ship the book back and they would replace it, except the book wouldn't get back in time for me to give it to him on Easter. Very disappointed, he still likes it though. So I guess it wasn't a total loss.
I bought this based on the positive reviews and was a little disappointed when we first got it. The illustrations are simple and beautiful, but I didn't think the "story" would hold my daughters attention. Well, I was wrong. She loves the bear and yells as soon as she sees him. We read the book at least once per day. So, I was wrong. The only thing I still don't like is that it is a heavy board book for little hands. She has a difficult time picking it up and bringing it to me when she wants to read it.
very simple for a young child. 8 x 8 board book. clean pages simple pictures 4 words in different order with pictures that reinforce the words. i though apple bear quite the most amusing illustration in the set.
Received this book as a gift for my kiddo and then bought three more to give as gifts. Great for all ages from young toddler to older toddler, for it's easy to "read," for them and very well done. Simply, simply cute!
