The little boy thought back about the time he was a baby. He would sit there and drink milk from his bottle. Mmmmmm! “GLUG, GLUG, GLUG ... BURP!” And then that baby had little pee and poop accidents in his diaper “all the time.” The pee went through the diaper on onto the floor. Ewwwww! Such a mess, but that’s what babies do you know. There were stacks and stacks of diapers for that baby, the one who would turn into a little boy, for Daddy to change. Oops, there was poop in that diaper! Yeah, but that was a long time ago.Just remembering those “yucky stinky diapers” made the little boy hold his nose. It really smelled yucky, but does that sort of thing happen any more? Of course not because there is such a thing as a potty to sit on. The diaper stuff is not for big boys because they wear all kinds of cool looking underwear. There’s the kind with stripes, checks, and even the kind with stars! Whenever the little boy got that I-have-to-use-the-potty feeling, he would “go into the bathroom, pull down [his] undies, and sit on the potty.” Do you know what happens next?Very young children have times when they transition from one stage to the next and potty training is certainly one of the most difficult. As a parent, I did find that animated big boy / big girl-like tales like “I’m a Big Boy Now” were a tremendous help. “I Use the Potty” is a much more realistic one than an elephant imparting a lesson. The artwork is very bright, animated, and does show the frustration the little boy has when he’s using the potty. On the other hand, we see the pride on his face when he sees the poop in the toilet. Potty training is one of those difficult milestones, both for the young child and the parent / caretaker working with them.
