Dan Gemeinhart’s “Some Kind of Courage” is an inspiring, uplifting novel. A courageous youth seeking to recover his beloved Indian paint horse …”we shared a heart …” She is his only link to his now deceased family; his personal mission to recover her provides a focal point for the novel. During his quest, he joins forces with and must learn to trust a young Chinese boy who speaks no English. The love of family, the courage to persevere against all odds, accepting others for who they are and not succumbing to prejudice, and the innate desire to do the right thing are the messages this novel imparts to readers. The protagonist, Joseph Johnson narrates his own story. His longing for his family is palpable; his thoughts as he visits his father’s grave for the last time are heartbreaking. “…I could have had a forest of boards for carving [a grave marker] and not had enough space to say everything that was in my heart …”Dan Gemeinhart uses the vernacular and syntax that are appropriate for the late nineteenth century, the educational level of the characters, and the western region of the United States. When Joseph just misses finding Sarah, his horse, he thinks “…Disappointment hit my heart like a snakebite …” Gemeinhart’s knowledge of the area, its topography, and the natural surroundings enhance the novel and lend an authenticity to Joseph’s story.Further, it is evident that Dan Gemeinhart is familiar with and knowledgeable about ‘tweens, their emotions and their thoughts. Joseph’s narrative seems authentic; each emotion real; and each reaction true-to-life. It is impossible to read “Some Kind of Courage” without becoming involved in the story and without experiencing the same heartaches and triumphs as the characters.
