Zoologist Nicola Davies presents an illustrated novel for young readers that proves you don’t need two arms to be strong.Pedru has always wanted to be a great hunter like his father, but after a lion takes his arm, he worries that he’ll always be the crippled boy instead. Pedru longs to kill the lion that mauled him and strengthens himself to be ready for the hunt. But when the opportunity arises, will Pedru have the strength to turn his back on revenge? Zoologist Nicola Davies perfectly merges a heart-pounding adventure with an important message about conservation, and Annabel Wright’s gorgeous black-and-white illustrations bring Pedru’s story to life.

There are so many of aspects of this book to like. The compassion I felt for the young Pedru who lost his arm to a lion. The compassion that grew as I learned more about the tragic situation of the lions. The pride I felt in Pedru as he realizes the complexity of the situation and makes a brave choice. All of this - I felt because of Davies' writing - clear, cohesive, appropriate for a transitional to fluent stage reader (2nd-3rd-4th grades). Also, through the narrative, the reader gains factual knowledge about this region of Africa and its inhabitants.I'd hand this to a savvy 2nd grade reader and a striving 5th grade reader even. I'd read aloud the first chapter which ends with Pedru realizing he'd lost his arm, leave the students hanging and put this book in the classroom library. I'd read this aloud as part of a conservation unit. There's a great author's note at the end about how conservation groups are working to educate east Africans about lions, build fences, walk at night with flashlights, and so forth in an effort to save people and lions. I'd read this aloud and then ask the students if they want to do more research and raise funds for donating. The author's note at the end could be a mentor text for research and informational/persuasive writing.Honestly, I just enjoyed reading this book and LEARNING.

I borrowed this from the school library for my read-aloud time, and this is the second year I've used it. My 5th grade students absolutely loved it. Pedru, the main character, is well-developed and easily likeable. I love that the author made his lion dilemma so multi-faceted. The supporting characters were as developed as they needed to be (no unnecessary information), and Davies made great use of the "show, don't tell" adage. I'll use this book as my read aloud for as long as I teach elementary.

I thought it was a wonderful book for children from 8 up. It shows that obstacles can be overcome. It was an interesting, true account of a small boy and his encounter with a lion.

What a great story...shows what true humanity is about and what we are capable of

Great new chapter book for young readers who thrill in the natural world and realistic stories. The illustrations add to the ambiance with original perspective and the feeling of Africa.

I just gave this to my 4 year old granddaughter, who needs a break from pink princess and jealous girlfriend stories. She lovedit, and got the message.
