My 7 year old niece is very interested in musical instruments and which ones she might be able to play once she starts playing in the school band in a few years. This book is a little over her head, but the big pictures helped me explain the size and shape of the instruments and how they are played. I should mention that I have a musical background and can play brass and woodwind instruments, so the explaining came from me, not from the book. The book provided the pictures.
This book contains a great overview of the history behind instruments, how they are made and the scientific principles of sound production. Unfortunately, the human voice is not included and should be as it is also a wind instrument with sound production very similar to man-made instruments and yet has its own uniqueness.
My 20-month-old son LOVES this book. After checking it out three times from the library, we decided to buy a copy. He loves all the pictures, and I like that as a parent it's not boring to read (or look through) with him.
Good book. A couple of the headlines aren't appropriate for children; disappointed by the lack of respect for the age range. Still earns four stars for great pictures.
DK books always have great photos,I got this book for my daughter, she enjoyed learning about the many familiar and strange instruments.
