Sibling duo Nellie and Gus, two regulars in Robie Harris’s books, explore the different types of family structure during a family visit to the zoo. The text weaves dialogue bubbles with informative text and vibrant illustrations to depict the many different kinds of family structures. Children will learn that families live in different landscapes, eat different food, and can have many different kinds of make-ups - children or no children, one adult or two, male or female parents, divorced or married. Finally, when Nellie and Gus invite their friends and family to their home for dinner, they realize that even within their own family, there are many similarities and differences. The author emphasizes that even though families can appear to be very different, they’re always trying to make each other feel happy and healthy. This book is impactful for young readers because it promotes inclusivity and community from an early age. Even though the descriptions about the different kinds of family structures are brief and somewhat vague, the illustrations throughout the book depict many different kinds of families in a much more explicit way. Overall, the message is that no matter what a family looks like, they try to make each other happy and do what’s best for each other. It’s clear that the purpose of this book is to celebrate the many diverse family structures that exist. However, two main problems may arise when reading this book. Firstly, the frequency of text that says that all families love one another and put each other’s best interests first is not necessarily reflective our students’ realities. Many students experience violence, substance abuse, financial hardship, and similar situations on a daily basis that may make them feel disconnected from the book.
