Like most of the Berenstain Bear books, the main subject is a matter that worries children or parents. In this case, the stay-at-home mama gets a job, classically over the objections of Papa. The children, excuse me, cubs, express their concerns about this major change and mama tells them how she hopes to cope. Cope they do, and Mama is very happy with her decision to open a quilting shop. The amusing part is that Mama gets a lot of quilting done as she prepares to open her shop! How does she do it? Most of us find it tough to parent two children and sew, let alone finish a half dozen quilts at the same time as we clean up a shop and organise a business. The small flaws of this book, as with the rest of the Berenstain Bears books, don't discourage my daughters, and don't detract from the main thrust of the discussion. That is the point of this series, after all.
The Berenstain Bears and Mama's New Job is but another great book from the Berenstain Bears series. In the beginning, the cubs are a tad apprehensive about the idea of their mama leaving them to start a career as a quilt-maker. But, with a little time and thinking, the two realize they are not losing their mama when she ventures into the career world after all. This book is great and has a wonderful message, as do all the books in the series. The illustrations are wonderfully done as well. I would recommend this book to anybody with children.
I used this book to teach a lesson on basic economics to first grade students. It was a lesson on goods and supplies. After reading this book, we had opportunities to determine how to purchase items with the money we have available. Great book.
The Berestain Bears are frightened when Mama starts a job and is away from home, but they soon find out that it's okay for Mama to be away and they calm down. This is good for youngsters upset about new jobs, parents away or anything like that.
We have tons of Berenstain Bears books - probably 90% of all those produced before the "Light House" series. In this book Mama Bear decides to start her own business. While I am all for mom's working, I was a little disappointed with the way they went about having Mama Bear go about this endeavor. Instead of discussing things as a family, she sort of made an announcement that she was starting a business.I had actually really liked Papa as a business bear because he was always available to the family. It didn't matter if he was off in the forest chopping wood or in his workshop building furniture - if anyone in the family needs him he gladly drops everything and comes running (this can be seen the books where they over schedule themselves as well as when the cubs bedroom gets too dirty).Mama could have run her business the same way - doing her creative and important work of making quilts while at the same time being close enough to meet the needs of the family as a unit. This wasn't the case. Mama Bear now works late and comes home well after dinner and instead of the family eating healthy meals - they now pick up burgers and fries while Mama Bear waves around cash. Really? So the cubs no longer eat balanced meals filled with veggies because the quilt business is so important? She no longer has time to spend quality time with the cubs (brother takes on her role for sister and sister takes on her role for brother). It would have been nice to see a more balanced role for Mama Bear in her new endeavor. Not all working mom's feed their families greasy burgers, fries, and milkshakes because she is too busy working to have a healthy meal! That said, my kids to enjoy this book and enjoy reading it along with the other 30 + titles we have around the house.
Loved these books as a child. And I'm loving them all over again as I read them to my child :)
I was unhappy with the time it took to deliver. I paid more in postage than I did for the books.Poney express usually takes two weeks. Priority Mail takes two possibly threes day anywhere in the Country. Needless to say I was unhappy about the time it takes to deliver.
Cute book. My granddaughter loves the Bernstein Bears and she picked this in.
