I bought several Spectrum books to help my kids with bridging gaps in knowledge and to help them transition to homeschooling (I have another curriculum I will be using). While I am not using this particular book just yet, spectrum books, in general, are clear, concise and logical to adults and kids alike. Each lesson starts with a pretest and will really help determine where your child needs help. This particular book is really just a supplement to curriculum as it only has word problems and relies on previous knowledge on how to compute and execute a particular type of math problem (like percents, ratios, metric conversions, line plots etc). In my opinion, the first 33 pages match well to their 5th grade math workbook. Pages 34-roughly 53 match to their 6th grade workbook, and the rest are really 7th grade and up. Do not let my breakdown deter you. My rising 7th grader who is struggling with math, hasn't really been exposed to many of the problems found in this book despite her having survived public school common core 4-6th grade curriculum. Right now, going into 7th she would struggle through this book. I think even an advanced math 7th grade student would find this book challenging. Here is why: One of the reasons I love these Spectrum books is because they provide REAL world content. For example, on page 30, the lesson has word problems relating to "Simple Interest" (Depositing money into a savings account and calculating interest earned after one year based on percentage and time). You can't do this problem and solve for the answer unless you have a solid understand of the math AND the concept. I have never seen any core curriculum come home with this type of content. So while the math lessons rely on knowledge at an earlier level, it encourages your child to really think about solving the problem instead of worrying how to do the math. I say it offers review, but that is sort of an understatement for the reasons stated above. The next "finding percents" lesson talks about Bill ordering supplies for his family store...The content is not dumbed down and it makes sense to both parents and children as a result. It offers a way to teach your child how to APPLY what they have learned in a regular curriculum. So note - this book does not necessarily teach the math needed for the problems. It offers a way to apply various learned concepts to everyday problems. My kids CAN NOT work through these books on their own. That is NOT the fault of how the books are written/constructed. The information is scaffolded well in all the books, but I guarantee your kids will have questions how to do various problems since pieces of the content are just not offered in a general math curriculum. I find that using the Math 5 book (and working up) is helping to effectively prepare and teach my kids how to use this book when they are ready. I would like to point out that the entire book is not going to be impossibly hard either. If your child is an 8th grader, this would serve as a solid review. If you child is rising 7th, this book will have content they need to master and serve as a nice supplement for their school year.

Has incorrect answers and some wording is incorrect and makes the problem more confusing. I read the word problem with my child and I interpreted the problem incorrectly. An example problem is as follows:The recipe calls for 6 1/2 cups of flour, but Emilio plans to divide this amount by 3/4 because he is serving fewer people. How much flour will he use? What makes the word problem confusing is that the word divide is in there with 3/4. Dividing by 3/4 will make you use more flour. But in the same sentence, it states he is serving fewer people. I concluded that it must mean multiply by 3/4. The actual answer was 8 2/3 flour. I can see why my daughter was frustrated and confused with this word problem.

I actually liked this as a summer review. I work with my daughter on math in the summers, and this was pretty good.

great product. Convenience shopping from home.5*****
