I just read this book.It "dumbs down" the reader terribly. Makes Paul Revere into a guy who just gained fame through Longfellow's poem "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere". I was quite offended by this author's depiction of him. So shallow. If you want your children to have a healthy respect for this admirable patriot who gave so much to found The Republic of United States of America stay away from this book. I wanted this to be great. We took our 8yr old grandson to see his home in Boston and learned Paul Revere died on May 10th--our grandson's birthday. He was instantly "connected" and wanted to know more. Esther Forbes account of Paul Revere is far superior. Another great kids book of the same period ---"JOHNNY TREMAIN". A fictional account of a young boy who through mis-fortune becomes a courier for storied patriots we know so well, Hancock - John Adams- Sam Adams etc.etc.
Excellent book to prepare for a school project for the colonial times. My son is working on a school project and has to write a newspaper as if it was written during the colonial times. This book will be perfect for that assignment.
I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.
This book is part of Grosset & Dunlapâs âWho Was...?â series. Like most all of the books in this series, this one is an excellent biography. It does a very good job of covering Mr. Revereâs life, from his birth in colonial Boston, through his famous ride, and on to the end of his life, with many informative sidebars on things the reader should know.Yes, this is a great book on a great American. It has a lot of great information on one of the lesser-known father of our country. My ten-year-old enjoyed it, and really gained a lot of understanding of the great man. It really is a great resource for readers 8-12 years of age. We both highly recommend it!
We just started reading the Who Was books, and I believe I've enjoyed them more than my grandson does. He is 10, and maybe a little young to read them. I'm happy that I bought the actual paper books, so he can re-read them again in a few years, I think he'll like them better.I really enjoy all the detail given about the early lives and how they don't sugar coat the people.
I really like this book because it gives you a lot of facts about Paul Revere before and after, you guessed it, his midnight ride on April 18, 1775. I think people that want to dig deeper into his life will enjoy this book a lot. Happy reading, and as we say in my hometown, don't forget to be awesome! ;)
This was an awesome book! I bought it to read to my second grader but just finished reading it to myself and she can read it to herself later. Haha I did not want to waight until she had time to sit still to finish it. I learned so many cool things about Paul Revere and that time in our history! I feel like it was also very exciting for a history book!
We have all the "Who Was...." series thus far. They are enjoyable for child & adult and a great way to know a lot about many different things. Easy to read, credible researched information. Worth the purchase.
