Simple enough for a K audience, but enjoyable and educational for much older children. Another reviewer mentioned that the "N" word is used. Well, the "N" word they are referring to is "Negroes," not what people usually refer to as the "N" word. And, it appears only on a photograph of a boy holding a sign that says "We won't go to school with Negroes," so it's not part of the story text.
Perfect for K-2 audience. Helps children understand how one person can make a difference. Most of my class was engaged by Ruby's story and had many great discussion points to share on the subject.
Great book! This is for a autobiography study for fourth graders. They highly enjoyed the book! We will use over and over.
This was beautifully written....from the perspective of Ms. Ruby when she was young. Easy for children to understand. I had my spouse even read it, just because he never heard of her....which was no surprise...schools only focus on one African American figure...Dr. Martin Luther King. Since schools do not do their part in expanding on the other people who also help change history....it is my role as a parent to expose my children to the "underexposed" history changers.
This is a fantastic book, totally age-appropriate for the 5-7 set. As others have noted, the photos show language that is no longer used to talk about African Americans, as well as language that we never okay, but I was able to have a conversation about those words that I *think* set the groundwork for more nuanced conversations down the road.
This book was great for really young kids. I read on some reviews that it had the f word but it was not in my book so I was confused. I think the story is appropriately told and I appreciate that it was written by Ruby herself. I recommend this story for children 3 and up who really enjoy being read to as well as for really early readers.
My four year-old and I think this book is wonderful. It is a great way to introduce a sensitive historical topic while reinforcing the importance of acceptance. She has been asking me to read it repeatedly.
I used the book for a special needs student in my high school history class while teaching the civil rights movement! Great book!
