This book is a very interesting story.I would recommend it for 3rd grade and above. The only thing I did not like about it was it did not have a lot of information on king tut.It mostly just had info on Egypt.Other than that I think it was a wonderful book with great vocabulary. The author really described things very well and made me feel like I was there.I loved the pictures with great detail . If you were doing a history report on king Tut or Egypt this book would come in handy.Thank you for reading my review and I hope you decide to read this book.
The Tut exhibit is in town this summer and I wanted to be able to provide some information to my seven year old before we went. This book was absolutely the right amount of information for the 7-10 year old age group. We enjoyed it so much that we have purchased additional books in the series and are racing through those as well. I highly recommend the series as a great introduction to biographies!
This is a great overview of ancient Egyptian life and Egyptian archeological history. The book uses the discovery of King Tut's tomb by Howard Carter to discuss these wider issues. Not enough is known about Tutankhamun to really write a full biography book for children about his life. Thus, I'd say only about a third of the book actually talks about him while he was alive. The rest discusses his father Amenhotep, everyday ancient Egyptian life, Egyptian religion, Howard Carter, the Rosetta Stone and Hieroglyphics, papyrus, and the genesis of the modern King Tut's curse myth.My 8 year old daughter is reading through this now for Ancient Egypt study. This whole series is a wonderful resource for advanced second graders through fifth graders. The official reading level for this book is 3.4.They are cheap to buy and pack in loads of information in a conversational style of text that children will enjoy. Elementary school libraries usually carry many of these books now. The more of these Grosset & Dunlap produce the better!
I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.
These books are great books for young readers. They are very informational and easy to understand for young students to learn more about a specific person and/or event. Definitely recommend for students and teachers!
Again... Huge fan of these books. My son's reading took off from reading these.... Went from needing help in reading to AG... Thank you Roberta Edwards! My son found his love of books thanks to the "Who was...." Series.
My daughter loved this book. It's informative and relatable to keep a kid interested. She was shocked at some of the facts about King Tut. " He was only 9 when he got married, how is that possible?" " They poke a needle up his nose and remove the brain..eww!"What truly made her happy is that in 6th grade, shortly after finishing this book they went over the same subject in history class. She was all smiles when she realized she knew this stuff. Every day she came home telling me what they talked about- that she already knew.It would be ideal to have a child read this book before digging into the textbooks. On a similar note, she also read the one about Anne Frank. With similar results. These books make it easier to grasp the history of a person and the time period in an easy to read format.
This is a good biography series for early chapter book readers. There are a lot of picture books that are biographies and there are a lot of chapter books, but this is one of the few in-between series.
