"This is not a book. This is a guest list for a party of my heroes. Thank you for inviting us."--Lemony Snicket, author of A Series of Unfortunate Events books"I feel honored to be included in this book. Women need to take radical steps to become feminists, and to be strong to fight for their rights and those of others facing oppression and discrimination. The world needs rad women to create a just society."--Dolores Huerta, Labor Leader, Civil Rights Activist"It's almost always with a chuckle that I view a cartoon image of myself. But to see cartoon-me positioned (alphabetically) amongst so many of my women heroes and role models . . . well, I just broke down and cried. Happy tears. I surely hope that this one-of-a-kind collection of radical American women reaches the hands of all children who want to grow up and become amazing women."--Kate Bornstein, author of My New Gender Workbook"Any alphabet book for children where 'P is for Patti' Smith and 'X is for the women whose names we don't know' is something I can recommend, especially when the book is as well written, representationally diverse and vividly illustrated as this one."--Francesca Lia Block, author of Dangerous Angels: The Weetzie Bat Books"I was totally in rapture reading this book. Bold women, bold colors, and fierce black paper cutouts. I cheer these histories of women who fight not for war or country or corporation, but for EVERYONE! I can't wait for my son to read this."--Nikki McClure, Illustrator of All in a Day"I need 2 of these books, one to read to all the kids in my life and one to rip the illustrations out of so I can frame them! This MUST HAVE super fun read fills in the missing pieces in so many kids' (and grown-ups') educations. Couldn't recommend it enough."--Kathleen Hanna, singer, Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruinie RuiLike all A-Z books, this one illustrates the alphabet—but instead of "A is for Apple", A is for Angela—as in Angela Davis, the iconic political activist. B is for Billie Jean King, who shattered the glass ceiling of sports; C is for Carol Burnett, who defied assumptions about women in comedy; D is for Dolores Huerta, who organized farmworkers; and E is for Ella Baker, who mentored Dr. Martin Luther King and helped shape the Civil Rights Movement. And the list of great women continues, spanning several centuries, multiple professions, and 26 diverse individuals. There are artists and abolitionists, scientists and suffragettes, rock stars and rabble-rousers, and agents of change of all kinds. The book includes an introduction that discusses what it means to be "rad" and "radical," an afterword with 26 suggestions for how you can be "rad," and a Resource Guide with ideas for further learning and reading.American history was made by countless rad—and often radical—women. By offering a fresh and diverse array of female role models, we can remind readers that there are many places to find inspiration, and that being smart and strong and brave is rad.Rad American Women will be appreciated by various age groups. It is Common Core aligned for students grades 3 - 8. Pre-school and young children will be captured by the bright visuals and easily modified texts, while the subject matter will stimulate and inspire high-schoolers and beyond.

This is a little gem of a book. Bought it for my 9-year-old niece and she hasn't put it down. What I love are the questions she's been asking me about the women profiled (how did she do that? Why have I never heard her name before? Isn't this one cool!?!). She's eating up all these stories about powerful women and I hope she internalizes the possibilities they hold up for her. Plus, the layout of this book is just adorable. Makes you want to keep turning the page. Love it.

This is a terrific book for boys! My 9 year old son loves it and we read a few each evening at bedtime. It's a book filled with empowering stories of amazing women, super role models for girls and boys alike. The book is nicely balanced to feature women working on a range of issues from academics, dancers, athletes, justices, etc. Love it and highly recommend!

The United States of America may have been founded by a bunch of men, but why should the guys get all the credit? American history is filled with stories about amazing women who took stands and rewrote their own destinies. Now these ladies are rewriting the alphabet, from Angela Davis to Zora Neale Hurston.Rad American Women A-Z celebrates 26 real American women, including punk rocker Patti Smith, the abolitionist Grimke Sisters, athlete Billie Jean King, activist Temple Grandin, and X (the unnamed women who have influenced and who will influence our American legacy). Each featured woman gets a full page detailing their stories and what makes them so important, and awesomely bright portraits accompany each. This book is perfect for schoolwork or for pleasure and is geared towards middle and older readers who are just starting to learn about history and activism. For those who want to learn more, the author has included a list of resources. Additionally, a Common Core curriculum has already been developed to accompany the book in the classroom. Good for reluctant readers. This review originally appeared on A Book and a Hug.

This book is, in a word, RAD! My 8 year old is just old enough to know that there are some people out there who have done some pretty awesome things, and is interested in learning about them. She was quickly intrigued to learn that MLK Jr wasn't the only person to have anything to do with the Civil Rights movement, and that so many RAD WOMEN were, too! Each letter of the alphabet was probably SO HARD to make a choice of just ONE woman, but each was clearly well chosen, and so beautifully summarized into one page of print (plus a really rad illustration to go along with it!). Perfect for ALL audiences. Definitely a great place to start your kids, or yourself for that matter, into learning more about some of the rad women that have done some pretty important things that have consequently shaped our lives as we know them today.I'm can't wait to see what subsequent publications may come from this clearly RAD pair of women!

So great to find a book like this that I can explore with my kids. This is an incredible conversation starter about what it truly means—and what it takes—to make a difference. The writing is solid and easy to follow, and the simple layout does not distract from the engaging content. Highly recommended.

Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries who Shaped Our History . . . and Our Future! (City Lights/Sister Spit)Definitely a good book to give to a young person as a gift. I would've liked the descriptions of each "rad women" to have been a little more detailed (not that I was expecting an "adult" read), but they did include an interesting and diverse list of women. These things considered, I would consider it necessary reading for a pre-teen. It would definitely add something to what (little) mainstream education teaches in terms of "important" historical women figures. I read it through and gave it to a niece (about 12 years old) and she loved the cover & illustrations. I think the fact that it looked "cool" convinced her to read it (above & beyond my suggestion). It even inspired her to research further some of the women included in the list, and it made me extremely happy to see her discover things on her own (outside of mandatory school work)!

This book is awesome. The art and design compliments the stories beautifully and I am so excited to share it with my 9-year-old. The type of things these women have accomplished are already hot topics in our house so I love that we can use this format to teach and learn more.

I absolutely LOVE this book. I've bought it for a least two people already and I think it will continue to be a go-to gift for years to come. It's a wonderful overview of a few of the many rad women in American history, and the attention to diversity of race, class, sexuality, career, age...it's inspiring. Absolutely check this out, especially if you have a preteen girl to give it to!
