I am a high school Literacy teacher. I had my doubts about using this book when I received it as the biographies were short and in large print. However, my students loved using this as an introduction to the lives of famous women. From this, they went on toresearch those women whose lives interested them.

Girls need great role models too, and this book highlights 26 wonderful heroines! The book is well written and very interesting. It gives just enough information to get you interested in each person and the diverse cultures of the women make it even better. I had initially purchased this for a grand daughter, but when I googled the book to find out more, I found lesson plans based on this book. So, I ended up giving it to my daughter in law who is going to become a teacher. Girls need positive role models to look up to and this one packs 26 amazing women into one book. Don't miss this one.

My 5 year old daughter and I love this book. Reading about the different challenges the featured women faced and their successes have given me a chance to explain societal issues such as racism, misogyny, and the barriers these women broke through and the freedoms we enjoy due in part to their hard work. I keep emphasizing to her that obstacles can be overcome with dedication and hard work.

I didn't before reading this, but it is a great way to learn of the importance of women in every walk of life. It is very readable and will get the point across to young listeners that women - whose names begin with one of the 26 letters - can do anything!

There's the familiar, expected, notable women--the flier Amelia Earhart, the black author Zora Neale Hurston, the artist Frida Kahlo, the philanthropist Eleanor Roosevelt. But there's also a number of accomplished lesser-known women and ones who have achieved recognition in recent years who are not yet seen as regulars in the circle of historically significant women. Thus, one finds the architect Maya Lin and the figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. Outstanding women from diverse ethnic backgrounds and active in diverse fields, from labor unions to science to entertainment, are included in the twenty-six for each letter of the alphabet. Each woman is pictured in a collage-like illustration with objects representing what she is recognized for.

When planning for elementary grades, it's been difficult for me to unearth well-written picture books about women who have made a difference in the world as we know it. I hit pay dirt when someone gave me this book to use as a resource for a unit studying the changes people make in the social world. The women depicted in this alphabet book are from many nations, many eras, and many cultures. They've all led different lives and have made unique contributions to entire societies around the globe: art, science, literature, aviation, politics...the list goes on. The illustrations are playful yet respectful and the concise stories on each page give the reader insight into the woman's personal and professional life. The author's note gives the reader a glimpse into the making of the book and the selected bibliography is arranged according to the alphabetical order of the featured women. Teachers and parents should not pass by this rich and rare glimpse of truly phenomenal women.

Awesome book! My 7 and 10 year old cousins (both girls) love to read a few each day and they talk about who's their favorite and why. It's really nice for them to see some strong female role models from the real world and the 10 year old has started talking about how she now wants to be an engineer and the 7 year old is really taking a liking to Grace the programmer (mostly because they share the same name but it's very exciting!)

I absolutely LOVE this book. I bought it for my two young daughters. I have been really happy with the age appropriate way that it tells uncomfortable truths. It isn't written in a way that is overly upsetting, but it does touch on racism, sexism, etc. I also love that it tells the stories of lesser known female heroes, women who are notable in their own right but not known as mainstream figures. If you are looking for a book to empower a child and show them what women are capable of, or to inspire them to overcome any obstacle-I highly recommend this one!
