We loved the first Pout Pout Fish book, and so happily purchased the second (Deep Deep Dark) and eventually this one also upon their respective releases. Although the concept is cute and the ending "lesson" is positive, the overall storytelling of the books following the original is problematic.Children learn through repetition. They are more likely to focus on something that is repeated multiple times than on something mentioned once. So, with the rhythm and the rhyme of the book, the take-away is from what is repeated the most...in this case, "...I'm not smart...I'll never get it...I don't belong". This may sound like an exaggeration, or taking something to the extreme, but our child never said the words "I'm not smart" until after this book. Nor did she fixate on "I'll never get it". These aren't words we use, and they certainly aren't things we have ever spoken to or over her. I'd be tempted to write it off as circumstantial or coincidence, but the same thing happened with the "Deep Deep Dark" book. She had never been afraid of the dark (and still isn't), but right after reading it, the concept of "I'm scared of the dark" became an option to her. It hadn't even occurred to her prior to this story! We literally read that book incorrectly and change the words to "I love the dark", every time the phrase is repeated, because the persistent negativity wasn't helpful. She loves the character, so we aren't about to outlaw the books, but I wish the writer and publisher had considered a little basic child psychology. This latest one has made me question whether or not we will continue adding to the Pout Pout Fish collection.
