I've read lots of Berenstain books to my 4 and 2 year old boys. This is probably the worst of the bunch. While most of their books are too wordy, often boring and present Papa as an oaf, I tolerate the other stories because of their strong moral messages (and a few have clever prose). However, this one was even lacking a moral message. Sister complained that Lizzy got more money for her teeth and she ended up getting the same as Lizzy? What message is that? If you complain, you'll get what you want? They try to make the up in price for Sister's teeth related to inflation and price fluctuations, but that message is inappropriate for the audience. Little kids in the 3-8 range aren't likely to notice that the price of goods go up or down, but they will notice Sister's complaining and materialism.
I like the Berenstain Bears. Cute, timeless, and typically with a nice message about fairness, cooperation, honesty, etc. This is the opposite! Sister complains that her friend gets more money for her teeth ($1 v. 25c) ... and Mama & Papa make up some hasty explanation about inflation and (voila!) Sister gets $1 for her next tooth. It drives me crazy. My little one loves it but it's so bad! I'm try to change the words as I read and/or hoping we "lose" it.Our (US) culture today is too materialistic and too competitive already. Kids talk about (and seemingly worry about) who gets how much for allowance, who has how many whatever-brand dolls, who wears whatever-brand boots or sneakers, or who goes where on vacation ... it's endless. Does it really need to start with a child's book about losing their first teeth!?Full disclosure, we have played some of these games with how much my older one gets with teeth (extra money when we're on vacation, after we moved, or when tooth fairy is late -- oops!) but somehow seeing it in writing and as relevant to a friend's teeth and/or as a reward for complaining -- from the Bernstains no less! -- is so much worse.Do not buy this book. It is a wolf in sheep's clothing!!
We love the Berenstain Bears and this story did not disappoint. We have almost all of the Bears books but my son was about to lose his first tooth so we had to get this for him. My daughter who is 7 read it to us and we all love it.
I make tooth fairy pillows, so was a little disappointed when it read that the tooth goes under your pillow. That's how I used to give my teeth to the tooth fairy. My grandchildren love their tooth fairy pillows that they can hang on the door. I have found other books that say you receive a gift that fits my pillow better.
We bought this because our 4 year old lost a tooth and we'd never talked to her about it. We hoped this would help her understand what was happening. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is it actually focused more on how much the tooth fairy provides...which I can definitely see being an issue, but we hadn't even gotten to that discussion. We were just trying to explain that what was happening was normal. It did allow us to determine a rate, which was cool. I hadn't actually thought much about that.
I was disappointed with this book in that the Papa and Mama Bear gave in and gave sister bear and increase in the amount of money she received for a tooth, just because that is what her friend received.
I loved this series of books when my children were small and now I'm getting them for my grand children. The messages is still just as important today as it was 28 years ago. My granddaughter that received these books for her birthday was very excited to have her own books. Now we've started her library of books.
This book literally makes me laugh out loud with the humor put in for parents. We have a very old copy and love The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist where sister has a loose tooth, and here again she has another loose tooth, but this time the focus is on the quarter (or dollar) that comes from the tooth fairy. This little story is fun to include another childhood whimsical fancy such as the tooth fairy, but it includes some economics as well with inflation and equality of fairness. It's amusing. It entertained my daughter with the story and entertained me with reality.*Thanks to HarperCollins for providing a copy for review.*
