What a wonderfully told story. I love that it teaches children that some people are different and that there can positive outcomes from sadness. Great little story. I'm sure my child will enjoy it someday (she is only 2 months old now)
This book was very disappointing. The text was fine, but the illustrator and publisher made the unfortunate choice to splash pools of blood and blood spurting arteries across four pages of the 26 page story. I love the story of Frida Kahlo's strength and spirit and have shared many of her paintings with my four year old daughter, so I found it a disappointment that the illustrator and publisher would choose such graphic illustrations for a book targeting such a young audience. There were numerous other paintings to choose from, and this could have been saved for children to be exposed to when they were older and more developmentally ready. The reduction of such a beautiful woman into a pill-shaped head with no neck was another disappointment.
I originally saw this book at the prado museum in Madrid and regretted not purchasing it then. I was disappointed to find that I couldn't get it online in the states, but am glad it finally became available. Love the illustrations.
Frida Kahlo is part of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series. This children’s biography is written in a format that is easy to read and comprehend. Readers learn about Frida Kahlo’s life and how she overcame many obstacles in life, yet was still able to follow her dreams. The story also speaks to being unique, the importance of practice, and how art can express emotion. In addition, the illustrations are colorful and detailed; however, there is one slightly graphic illustration regarding Kahlo’s accident that may not be suitable for all readers. Additional biographical information and pictures are also included at the end of the story. A copy of the book was provided for this honest review; however, no other compensation was provided.
Beautiful children's book highlighting the life of Frida Kahlo. I especially like the emphasis that Kahlo overcame great obstacles to become a celebrated artist. This is an excellent way to introduce students of all ages (especially the younger students) to Kahlo's life and work. Illustrations are colorful and interesting. This is an excellent addition to your personal or teaching library.
I bought this as a gift that I could not give. The illustrations were graphic for a children's book. One example Frida was in a car accident and the illustration had her laying on the ground outside of the car/bus in a pool of blood. I was very excited about getting the Amelia airheart and coco Chanel and Mia book, but am now concerned about their content.
