I am artistic and love drawing with my kids. I really like all of Barbara Soloff Levy's books. She uses only a few, uncomplicated steps. My girls (7 & 5 years) can sit down with these books and follow the steps themselves.
I'd say this is better for older kids 7-8 yrs. My daughter who is 5 loves to draw, but some of the princesses are difficult to draw. There are some easier ones she can do. It's a cute book though and I even tried drawing some things out of it since I'm artistically challenged.
I purchased three of these books for three of my female grandchildren as gifts. All three children adore the books. The amazing thing is that the children's ages vary from five years to fourteen years old. Almost immediately they began to follow the directions to draw. I was amazed to find that the two five year old children could do so well. One of the first items that one of them drew was a castle. I am not sure how long this interest will last but for right now they are happy and content to spend at least an hour at a time entertained with their new how to draw books. Thank you.
Our young daughter enjoys this book tremendously, sketching the pictures shown within. It's done very well and is easily among her top favorite books and is perhaps her favorite drawing book of those she owns.
My seven-year-old daughter has developed a keen interest in art and she loves drawing, especially fairy tale princesses, fairies, etc. This book was just what she needed as it is not overly complicated as to put her off, and not too simple that it does not pose any sort of challenge in terms of developing her artistic skills. The steps are easy to follow and progress just right for young children who are able to focus for short periods of time. I am quite hopeless at drawing and found this book to be a fun project book to work on with my daughter. We spent a pleasant afternoon drawing various fairy tale pictures, and then painted them! Highly recommended.
My daughter loves to draw so I bought this book for her for Christmas along with two other books of the same kind. She immediately got a pencil out and started practicing. She's only six but it's made a vast improvement on her drawing skills and she's so happy she can now draw everything in the book fairly well. She has even started teaching her friends how to draw certain things she learned in this book!
It's a nice book, no question there- plenty of princesses and fairy tale pictures to learn to draw as promised. However, on the manufacture states that this book is suggested for ages 6+. I bought this for my six year old sister. While she is no daVinci, she is an ok artist for her age. She found it very difficult to replicate most of the steps in this book. I would say these drawings are aimed more towards the 10+ crowd. Though designs are not terribly intricate, many steps are presented at the same time, and the slightest difference in angles and shapes greatly changes the end product. Not upset with what I bought, I should have looked more closely at the steps shown on the cover (in my defense I thought that the actual book might break the steps down more than those seen on the cover).
It would have been helpful to see a few more previews of what was inside the book. I got this as a gift for my niece who has recently shown an interest and talent for drawing, and when it arrived it contained tutorials on how to draw things that were both too complicated and too simple, with some in between. I was impressed by the variety of images included, because when I purchased it I was under the impression that it contained only princesses. I think the product information may have been altered since then. She seemed to like it, although she lives several hours away so I'm not sure if she had any trouble trying to go through the steps. Overall I think it was a good find!
