This is a beautifully illustrated well-written story about a little known subject. Almost everyone associates the Mount Rushmore monument with its designer and creator, Gutzon Borglum. How many people know that this majestic project was continued and finished by his son Lincoln? Children can learn about a great moment in American history and what hardships and obstacles were overcome in creating an American icon. A perfect book for ages 6 - 12, I purchased a copy for my grandchildren and watched them devour it.
Vivid illustrations show the technology of carving the mountain; the text tells the biography of the sculptor's son who grew up to finish the project. Also, we loved Rushmore "Rushmore" by Lynn Curlee.Take this one with you on your road trip to see the monument. Great book.
Hanging Off Jefferson's Nose tells young readers about the boy who grew up on Mt Rushmore, one of the most famous landmarks in America. Lincoln is the son of the sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Named after Abraham Lincoln, he is an American hero in his own right. Until now, his story has not been widely known. Young readers (and adults, too!) will love learning about Lincoln and the role he played in creating and completing the monument. The beautiful illustrations and engaging text offer the "story behind the story" including details about the challenges faced during the building process. A truly fascinating book!
We had gone to Mount Rushmore several years ago with our grandson and this helped him remember the trip and the art work.
A book about a hard-working young man, the son of Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The book focuses on Lincoln Borglum's early life of work and discipline and then the huge responsibility he undertook when his father died with the project incomplete. The story tells of the love the working men had for him, and of the respect he showed the local native Americans. The illustrations are excellent, rich in details and history. Winner in my book!
