As one of those who grew up from my mid-teens with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, I personally witnessed the evolution of rock to hard rock and then heavy metal. As a devoted fan of Sabbath since the tender age of 15 (I used to fall asleep to mixtapes of Sabbath LPs in High School, much to my father's surprise) I have read every book I could get my hands on (including one of the first books seriously addressing the topic: Chris Welch's "Black Sabbath", originally published by Proteus Books in 1982), as well as various interviews and documentaries. I even wrote a paper for a college English class in 1983 entitled "Black Sabbath: Light in the Darkness" refuting the then-prevalent belief that the music of Black Sabbath espoused worship of The Devil.I found Mr. Aberback's book a pithy, easy read. Well researched and fact-filled, it is clear that the author has paid an effective and loving homage to the progenitors of the musical style which we know now as Heavy Metal. For anyone who wishes a concise, yet essential guide to understanding the true essence and evolution of Black Sabbath, I can recommend no better place to start than with this book.
