This children's book has an amazing array of heroes--historical figures who changed the world around them, with their contributions felt to this day. The author encourages readers to find the heroes inside themselves. The illustrations are colorful and spectacular.

Yet another retelling of Susan B. Anthony and George Washington with maybe George Washington Carver thrown in for some diversity? Not a chance! The book and its companion CD feature heroes of a wide range of colors, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, times, and achievements. Portraying songwriters and the inventor of ice cream as heroes teaches kids to think outside the box and be proud of whatever contributions they can make to the world, rather than the "all or nothing" dichotomy so often presented in hero narratives. While positive and age-appropriate, the stories plant the seeds of awareness of some of the less sunny parts of American history, opening the door for later dialogue, compassion, and understanding as our kids grow. The illustrations are gorgeous and engaging - be prepared for younger kids to start telling stories about the just-complex-enough backdrop, and the CD is already a favorite in our family car stereo. Thank you Angela and Ellis! I hope you guys do a sequel!

Beautifully illustrated by Angela Padron, THE HERO IN YOU by Ellis Paul is a delightful peek into the histories of real-life heroes like Rosa Parks, Ben Franklin, Jackie Robinson, Thomas Edison and others. Each hero is represented as a child and each has a special song of their own so that kids can sing along with the accompanying CD. One of the things I loved about this book for young readers is its inspirational message that there's a Hero in all of us! I highly recommend this book.

Our daughter got this book/CD as a gift when she turned five. At first I was skeptical and thought she might be a bit too young to get into it. Boy, was I wrong! Within a week, she was listening to it constantly, looking at the images and asking questions. It allowed us to open many discussions about artists, inventors, civil rights... Eight months later, she's still into it. Martha Graham has become her favorite and she mimics her choreography. It has become our go-to gift for all our friends. The songs are really good and the lyrics are fun and intelligent.

Disclaimer...I've been a fan of Ellis Paul, the folk singer, for over 15 years. I would pretty much buy anything he put out there. But a kids' book? Kids' songs? Even I wasn't too sure about that. And then I bought it for one of my godsons. And I have to say it's brilliant in every way. The book itself is full of engaging illustrations accompanied by facts about the individual heroes featured as well as lyrics to the songs on the accompanying CD. The songs on the CD each have a short introduction by Ellis about the subject of the song, and the songs are catchy and sing-along-able for kids and still pleasing and repeatable for adults. The variety of heroes featured shows kids the variety of ways that people can be heroes and the importance and value of diversity in the world. The book/CD tell kids fun facts about people they have probably heard of (Edison, Franklin, Einstein) and introduces them to some they may not be familiar with as well. To wrap it all up, Ellis makes a point of telling kids via story and song that they can be heroes too...that they can have ideas and talents and can make a difference too. It's genius, really, and I truly wish all parents would get this for their kids and read and listen and sing together as families.

This interesting book with music CD highlights 13 diverse, famous people who persevered against the odds. The text includes song lyrics and additional facts about each hero. At the end, one more hero is depicted – the reader. The last song on the CD, THE HERO IN YOU, has a wonderful, positive, and motivating message for kids. It’s all about the idea that YOU can be a hero if you try and even if you’ve been through difficult times. The colorful, textured-looking illustrations are fun, and they work well with the theme and words of the book. Each hero is depicted as a child, which will help kids relate to them. If there is an option to buy the book with or without the CD, I recommend getting the CD, since it’s easier to understand the flow of the text (lyrics) when you hear the songs.

This is a great picture book. It has the most adorable, colorful illustrations and it's a great way for kids to learn about famous people including athletes, musicians and scientists. I got it for my home collection but it comes with a CD that would also make it a perfect book for a classroom. Loved it!

Great addition to any young reader's library. Book comes with a CD, which makes the biographical info fun to learn. Padron's artwork is very pleasing to the eye and her use of texture makes The Hero In You stand out from the rest. Looking forward to seeing more from Paul & Padron!!
