In the years shortly before the Civil War, many Southern plantation owners and their families "summered" in the cooler climate of the northern states, often along the New England coast. These journeys frequently included side trips to New York, Boston, or Philadelphia to replenish the family's wardrobes with the latest fashions. The particularly wealthy occasionally went to Europe, returning home with stylish apparel from London or Paris.Clothing worn during this period by members of antebellum society conveyed a distinct glamor and elegance. Tom Tierney captures the fine details of authentic garments in 29 ready-to-color illustrations. Included are walking costumes, evening gowns, morning and afternoon dresses, and wedding apparel for women, as well as suits, vests, trousers, and handsome military uniforms for the men.Descriptive captions accompany illustrations in an attractive coloring book that will not only please coloring book fans, but will also be of use to costume historians and designers.

Looking for fun with my felt pens I discovered this book to be informative as well. But best of all is the paper. The felt pens do not bleed through to the next page! I've bought other books of this type but the ones by Tom Tierney have the best paper for felt pen coloring. I plan to purchase many more!

For someone like me who loves to study historical fahsions, Tom Tierney has given me more to look at. Its a wonderful & thoughtful book cover to cover, and the detail impressive. Enjoy!

I would have given this book a 5 star review for the lovely detailed drawings of the fashions of the Old South. I bought this as a gift for my mother. But I didn't feel I could because the art is printed on both sides of the page. Even though the paper is a nice quality, any use of markers or watercolor will bleed through to the other picture on the back side. So, in order to let my 76 yo mother use all of her art supplies to fully enjoy this book, which I know she will, I have to copy at least the back side pictures onto another sheet, and may have to just do them all to make sure she doesn't get confused by it. Too bad, really. Next time, print one drawing per sheet and you'll have 5 stars from me! I would have paid $1 more, which many of the single sided books are selling around $5 - $6 on sale, to get this feature.

I found this coloring book to have wonderful pictures of the Antebellum period to color in my own way and use my imagination as to how they would appear. The information at the bottom of each page was a fun lesson in style history.

I am a big fan of Tom Tierney's books. This one has a lot of background in it as well as the fashions of that period. He draws both male and female and always writes a little paragraph or two about the clothing depicted. They are great coloring books to daydream while your coloring and picturing yourself in the very same gown in your favorite color.

This book is a good book for people who love history, fashion and coloring, which I do!! I my con would be that it's printed on both sides of the paper, so if you want to frame one picture you lose the back side. Also, if you press too hard it comes through on other side! Still, I'm am enjoying it!

THE PIUCTURES OF THE FASHIONS FROM ANTEBELLUM DAYS ARE SO PRETTY AND SO FANCY. THEY ARE A REAL BLAST TO COLOR. IM SURE GLAD WE DONT STILL WEAR ALL OF THESE CLOTHES--ESPECIALLY DURING HOT SUMMER DAYS. WHEW!!!! DONT KNOW HOW THESE LADIES SURVIVED THESE FASHIONS!!!!

Tom Tierney struck gold with this compendium of fashions from the Old South. His descriptions of the fashions and suggestions for coloring each picture make this book an educational asset as well as a childhood pleasure. My daughter delighted in several of Tierney's books but this is her all-time favorite, so far. I heartily recommend it.
