I purchased this for my granddaughter on a friend's recommendation - and I actually bought one for myself too! The instructions are clear - the pictures help a lot - and there are things that I never knew - hints and tricks for sewing - that are fantastic. My husband is also enjoying it - learning to sew!Great job Sophie!
I ordered 3 sewing books, and this and another were great. My First Sewing Machine Book was a waste of money. This one has great pictures and is written on the kids' level, which is nice. I think it's cool they write it from a child's perspective. My one complaint, as most books are, is that it starts off so basic and then the projects get harder and harder. That sounds like a good thing (and it is in a way), but the last project is quite complicated. There's no way you'll be ready for it just by progressing through the book. I would rather have it have just a bunch of beginner projects, as kids will be beginners during many, many sewing projects. However, I found the tips useful, even for myself (I, myself and not great with a sewing maching, but I know some stuff).
I looked at a lot of sewing books for my granddaughter and this seemed the best. Its emphasis is on machine sewing with a lot of information in an easy to understand format and sewing projects that are fun and easy to comprehend. It describes the parts of the sewing machine, how to thread it with other basic information geared for an older kid.I do wish it had sewing pages found in other books for the child to practice following lines on paper without thread in the machine. However these would be easy to make on your own by drawing straight lines, curved lines and lines with corners on plain paper.
I got this book to help teach my 7 year old daughter to sew. I've been sewing myself since I was about that same age. What I think is great about this book is that it really lays out the basics of sewing terminology, getting to know your sewing machine, and elements of various stitches including embroidery stitches. I suspect if I left the book laying around my daughter would pick it up and read it (even though she's only seven). I do think that part of the book is an excellent reason to get it for a child/tween without a sewing heritage, like if you were an "auntie" for a friend's kid if your friend didn't sew.My daughter picked out a couple projects - the headband and a felt ornament - we went through the instructions together. She did all the hand sewing and some of the machine work (although I did handle the rotary cutting parts).I definitely recommend this book for a new sewist, especially if their parents don't sew. The projects are listed in order of increasing difficulty, and there's enough variety that you don't think you're only making totebags.
I'm very impressed by the range of fun projects in this book. The illustrations are clear and helpful and the photos are fun and engaging. You can tell that this family does a lot of sewing. They've filled the book with useful tips such as using a bicycle clip for large projects to keep the fabric from shifting too much. I also adored the emphasis on projects that make for great slumber party activities and that can be traded with friends. (In that, it reminds me of the sadly out-of-print Klutz Press books on crafting that I loved so much in the 90s.)The projects move from a simple back pack clip to smocked garments and messenger bags that would be fun for a more advanced sewing student. They also work with a wide range of materials. In addition to the projects, they've included a lot of foundational information on sewing materials and techniques that will be useful when children want to design their own projects.
This is a fabulous book for young sewers! I saw an interview with the author, Sophie, and her mom on Nancy Zieman's "Nancy's Corner". She's a very impressive young lady! I ordered two of these: one for my 8 year old niece and one for me. That way, the two of us can talk sewing long distance. I can also use my copy as a reference for my after-school sewing club. This book has good photography (lots of pictures) and great descriptions. Sophie teaches how to use basic sewing tools and the basics of the sewing machine. There are many projects that appeal to young people such as bags, some clothes, and accessories. It offers a tangible and valuable alternative to watching TV. Besides, learning some sewing skills helps a child throughout life. I highly recommend this book for youngsters learn to sew. And I hope Sophie keeps providing inspiration to young people for a long time to come.
My 5 year old granddaughter wanted to learn to sew and all the sewing experts said to wait until she was at least 8. This book written by parents and their daughter has us sewing a dog bed, our current project, and we are having a blast.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I am a total novice to sewing. My 9 year old daughter asked for a sewing machine, and I was hesitant because I myself have no knowledge of using one. She was very insistent about owning a sewing machine. Honestly, I let the issue go for almost a year to make sure she was truly interested in sewing, plus I was intimidated by the idea of using a sewing machine. Well she kept insisting she wanted a sewing machine, and after extensive research I purchased a sewing machine and this book. I know you probably didn't need all of this background information, but I wanted you to know where I am coming from in reference to using this particular book.It has been the most informative and helpful reference I have used up to this point on using and caring for a sewing machine. I particularly like the fact that it uses a computerized sewing machine as a reference. All the other references uses standard sewing machines, and it was becoming overwhelming and confusing for me. This book breaks everything down into simple language. Yes children's language, but for me it was the best way to teach me and my daughter. The language is by no means condescending, but it is clear and concise. It reviews sewing must; such as, materials, tools, sewing machine parts, and the basics of sewing. I was particularly pleased with the basics of sewing section, because it includes measuring the body and fixing mistakes. The projects themselves are cute, simple, and practical. They include a simple pillow, a headband, backpack decorations, and a pool cover-up. These are just a few of the 16 projects, and they progress from simple to more complex. My daughter is so anxious to do all of the projects. Actually, I myself am excited to get started on the projects.
