This is a great book for kids 6-8 who like to create with clay. My daughter loves it and so do her friends. We give it as a birthday gift along with some modeling clay and that has been a big hit! Plus it's really nice to give a gift that inspires creativity instead of giving plastic.
This book has some great ideas, but instructions are minimal and they don't explain how to keep the clay from getting fingerprint marks and look smooth. Just go online for some free ideas instead of wasting your money.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is a bit sparse as far as ideas, but provides some really fun, basic ideas about how to manipulate clay for young hands. The 8 year old girl who received this as a gift used it as an inspirational jumping off point, if you will, and began to see how she could get what was in her mind out into clay form by using some of the techniques highlighed in this book.
Most of the "negative" reviews I'm seeing I think fail to take into account this is aimed more at a younger audience. Or perhaps that's just my impression, since I originally found this in the kids section at my local library.Anyway, when I first found this book, I didn't select it to work in clay. I've been teaching myself 3D graphics (ie similar to what you'd see in a Pixar or sci-fi flick or in video games) and creating characters was one of the areas I was struggling in. This book broke the characters down into simple shapes, which I found easier to understand than some of the other methods I had come across. So much so, in fact, that I found doing these characters on the computer helped me understand shapes in a way that made it easier for me to do later projects.But my kids love this book too, and have fun modeling clay characters with it. It's a great book for teaching anyone (young or old) how to combine basic shapes to create a variety of characters.
There was not enough selection in the book. I expected more options...we could have found these options online.
The book was good, but my little ones were not interested in following the directions. I do believe that if they were older and able to read, they would have enjoyed it better
