My mom is a children's librarian (she does all the story times at her library). My daughter will be 3 years-old next month and loves an episode of Barney where they act out this song (with just four in the bed). So I asked my mom if there was a book version. She told me about this one and said it's the best one she's ever seen. Ignore the person who said the wheel isn't attached in the back; it is. That reviewer had a broken book and it obviously never occurred to them that might be the case. The wheel is secure -- no way to even access it to get it out. My only complaint is that the little finger grips are a tad small. For some children, this might pose a challenge. My daughter struggled with it for a minute or two but quickly figured it out and can turn it perfectly the same day she got the book. This book held my daughter's attention for over an hour straight and then all day she has returned to it again and again. She even ASKED to take an EARLY nap (she usually fights us on the nap) and she took the book to bed with her. That's a winner in my book any day! It's really a cute book and a great way to sneak in some math lessons. One-to-one counting (being able to count items, such as how many children are left in the bed) is a hard concept for little ones. My mom (the librarian) was first a kindergarten teacher for over 25 years and she said her 5 year-olds struggled with this concept. It's never too early to start teaching them and this book makes math fun. I highly recommend it!
As a music teacher...I sing this book to my Kindergarten ,and 1st grade classes. It would be excellent for preschoolers also. They absolutely love it and join in singing everytime. They actually shout "yay" when I get the book out. This is my Third copy of "There were Ten in a bed" because I literally wore out the other two!
This is the second copy of this book for my grandson as he 'loved' the first one to pieces - literally. I usually sing the writing and he really enjoys that as well as seeing the babies fall out of bed. Great for little ones.
This book is still a favorite, months after I purchased it. The pages are sturdy and withstand a young child's hands. The illustrations are so colorful and each child's expression as he or she tumbles from the bed is priceless. Even if you don't know the song, the repetition of the text is musical. Don't forget to turn the book over after the last page to see all ten of the children asleep on the quilt.
I owned this book as a small child, LOVED it, Kept it, and gave it to my 2 year old. She LOVES it! Now I have to buy a second one for her! We have read it so many times it is falling apart. No child should be without this book!
This book is perfect for Pre K- Grade 1! I used this book with my Kindergarten ESOL classroom when I was an elementary music teacher. Little did I realize that every songbook, like this one, my ESOL students would run home and teach their families. One Spring afternoon, one of my little 5 yr. old students took me by the hand outside to hear his newly immigrated family speak English. When I arrived, they broke into singing confidently with all the actions. I heard, "There were ten in the bed..." I love this book and all the memories that go with it. You can't go wrong with this purchase!
This book engages even a ten month old. The rhyming, repetition and movement don't miss. My grandson wants to hear it over and over, tries to turn the wheel, and we usually read it at least twice. He does like to "refill" the bed (He is one). We are long distance, he can not say grandma, but I think, over the phone or "skyping", he recognizes me when I say, "There were ten in the bed...." Eventually, the book can lead to counting.
This is a great book! The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because my daughter is two and she turns the kids in the bed with her finger through the hole, not the notch on the side. The pages are not your normal book paper and they actually give her little paper cuts everytime she reads this book by herself. I have put it up until she gets a little older, or we can read it together.
