I enjoy The Beatles' music. Musically, I'm not sure if there will be another group that will match the influence they have had and will continue to have. I've always enjoyed the song "Yellow Submarine." The song is catchy and has just the right mixture of musical prowess and catchy pop sentimentality. The movie YELLOW SUBMARINE is a completely story. Unlike many Beatles fans, I've never enjoyed the movie. I realize that it is a product of its time, but beyond Beatles music there's really nothing I find appealing in the film; the flower power message doesn't fly well in a post-9/11 world. However, that opinion apparently is a minority one because the movie YELLOW SUBMARINE has been adapted into this children's book.This version of the story attempts to stay true to the "story" in the movie. However, the songs from the movie are not here. Instead, Beatles' song titles are tied into the writing throughout. The illustrations come directly from the movie, though in some cases they have been minutely altered.I understand why YELLOW SUBMARINE has been adapted into a children's book. The Beatles are still popular and parents and grandparents want to share the love for The Beatles to their children and grandchildren and a children's story is a good way to do so. However, the movie YELLOW SUBMARINE doesn't make a very good children's story. It's the type of story I know that as a child that if I read it or had someone read it to me, I wouldn't have found it very interesting.I read the story to some kids I know during their reading time. These were first and second-graders. I'm a pretty good storyteller and I made the story as interesting as I possibly could (doing different voices with the characters, using hand motions to act out actions, etc.).
