I bought this from to use as we are studying through the early 1800's for school (homeschool). It was too advanced for my son (1st grade), but it triggered some interesting discussions about Beethoven, and I just sat and read the whole thing myself. Very interesting, and perfect if you are studying this time period as there will be sections in the book about the culture, times, music. It also has activities to do. You could be busy for awhile with this book. I am no expert on Beethoven so cannot comment on it's accuracy but it completely covers his life, career and personal. I feel like I have a much better sense of who he was. Very interesting! We will use more of this book in a few years when we come around to studying this time period again.

I was attracted to this book because of the 21 activities mentioned in the title. The biography information is just right for a bright elementary or middle grade student, and as an adult, there was enough new (to me) information about Beethoven to keep me reading the whole thing. The biographical information is well-written and broken up logically, with activities sprinkled throughout the book. The activities all pertain to Beethoven and music yet cross into other subjects like art, other cultures, and science. They range from how to create variations on a familiar tune (Twinkle Twinkle is the example they suggest) to building a model that shows how the eardrum works. I am planning to try several of the activities with my 12-year-old homeschooled child in the next couple of weeks.

Great writing, however, I wouldn't say this is for young children, maybe for a child about 12-15. The experiments in it are particularly interesting. Found out stuff I didn't know myself. It is actually very detailed.

Probably not many kids know about this composer since he lived so long ago, but the biographical material is well researched and the projects are interesting. For a kid who is interested in music and history this one's a winner.

I purchased this book for my 12 year old grandson as he was working on a project regarding Beethoven and his music , but before gifting, I perused as I always do to ensure that it was appropriate and also so that I could discuss with him once he'd read it. I was intrigued and delved deeper into the book and found it well-written and extremely informative. Mu grandson and I really had some nice discussions and comparison of viewpionts. In today's world, it's difficult to find age appropriate material that keeps children interested and informed. This book certainly fits the bill and both of us gained knowledge from it.

Beethoven for Kids begins with an introduction explaining some of the many obstacles Beethoven had to overcome in his life. He was deaf, lived in poverty, and had an alcoholic father. He had poor health, and he had to support his mother and younger siblings. We are then treated to a timeline that chronicled major milestones in his life. The book then walks us through Beethoven's life and his major symphonies. Included in the chapters are extra boxes of text that tell you interesting background or factual information like who Beethoven's patrons were or what a symphony is. The greatest part of the book are the activities you can do with your children. The activities vary in degree of difficulty, from making a silhouette picture to making Austrian apple pancakes. This is a very engaging book perfect for kids 9 and older that not only teaches them about Beethoven and music, but also the time and place he grew up in. Highly recommended.

I had previously gotten the GIUSEPPI VERDI for kids which is nothing less than STUNNING and now have the BEETHOVEN FOR KIDS. Both these works are extraordinary pieces for our children, young teens, and "big" kids like us 21+. What I'm so happy about is this is not dry a, boring discourse about Beethoven. The author manages to breathe life into her book by providing easy-to-understand historical references circa Beethoven's life, anecdotes, glossy artwork and geographical references (the book's cover and back artwork alone are beautifully rendered). The icing on the cake was finding all kinds of fun, unique activities for kids, meant to "pull" them into the times and into the mind of Beethoven and the culture of that era. It's like being drawn into a time warp! It's nice to have such books when our schools are cutting back the budget allocations for music and art. A book like this (as well as the new book on Verdi and his operas) could be part of history lessons, geography lessons and literature since it's all about the feel of the culture and society of Beethoven's time. Incidentally, since society has been made painfully aware of bullying and its horrible consequences, let's not forget that Beethoven, from the time he was a young boy, was told he was a failure, a no-talent, and someone who was "stupid" and who would never amount to anything. Read the book and find out why Beethoven is still having the last laugh!

My son needed a book on Beethoven for a research paper. After downloading this he read it non stop finding it very informative and engaging. He eagerly wrote his paper with full and complete knowledge of this musician's life. I fully recommend this book.
